Living in Bliss

Bliston Suwan Park View aims to make everyday a special day at this outstanding residence.

If prime location in the heart of the city, world class amenities, exclusive privacy, and warm hospitality is the description of an ideal home. Today these can all be found in the description of Bliston Suwan Park View.

The residence is conveniently located only a few hundred meters away from the main road across from Central Chidlom. This provides guests easy access to the BTS or other public transport at any time of the day. In addition the facilities, rooms, and environment are maintained at a world class level.

“We’re new so we try harder,” joked Kijja Laowsuwan, Residence Manager.

However, most expats would prefer international names that they are familiar with from home. But Kijja explained that international chains tend to be rigid in their management of the residence. In a way he views that this makes many of his competitors similar just because they fit into the model of chain operations. This opens many new opportunities to develop Bliston as a different sort of residence that can combine the strength of world class standard amenities and operations with warm Thai hospitality.

“If the chain requires you to greet the guests with “good morning” that is what you do. But I think that it is unnatural in Thailand when our warm welcome “sawasdee” should be just as good,” he said.

When most expats are looking for a “home” five month old Bliston is a new name competing in a crowded market. But being “new” does not mean that the management is inexperienced. Quite on the contrary the management has had five years managing the residence and has meticulously planned the birth of the new project even right down to the name.

“The board thought that it is important to bring happiness to our guests. Therefore, it became the heart of our concept which led us to think of the word “blissful”. We then combined it with the location “Tonson”, to get our present name,” explained Kijja.

The idea of happiness is brought into the entire operation of the residence. This is developed through the idea of giving the guests a “pleasant surprise”. Often the result is the compliment that Bliston is indeed a “home away from home”.

“Most expats are here to work. They have to deal with changes in the culture, workplace, and people. What we do at Bliston is to give them one less thing to worry about –their home,” said Kijja.

One of the stories he recounts is of a UK resident who received a surprise birthday cake. This is a reflection of the care that the staff have for their “guests”.

“Here we work as a team. The staff members from all units give us information about the guests which serves as valuable clues on how to give them a “pleasant experience” at Bliston. Many of these “surprises” are not big on price value but they do definitely make a good impression on those who need to work away from home,” he explained.

As the residence manager who has been working on this project from the start, Kijja is confident of the current residence as well as of the future prospects built on the strength of the Suwan group which owns the project.

“We are looking forward to combine the location of our other service projects such as the Suwan Golf Course in Nakorn Chaisri. In the future when we integrate our services our guests will not only receive the best “home” they will also be served with great activities,” said Kijja.

In addition Bliston Suwan Park View is planning both local and international expansions.

“We hope to expand to other prime locations in both Bangkok and major provinces like Chiang Mai. In fact I think that a few years along the line we may even go to major cities like London. That is the future but for now we are looking to focus our efforts to make Bliston the jewel in the crown of our property business,” concluded Kijja.

A Bliston Experience

“Blissful living perfectly encapsulates the experience of a night in Bliston…”

How do I get to Bliston Suwan Park View? Luckily, I didn’t have to wonder, nor wander, too long. Being in the heart of the city , most everyone knows Central Chidlom along Ploenchit Road. The popular shopping complex makes an idea landmark for getting to Bliston as the soi the serviced apartment complex is in – the lushly tree – lined Soi Tonson – is conveniently right across from it. If I didn’t drive, taking the BTS would’ve been fine as I notice the Chidlom Skytrain station is but a 3 – minute walk away.
What a great location, I thought to myself. Nearby are Central World, Gaysorn, Siam Paragon and other plazas and sites all accessible from the Chidlom Skywalk. And come to think of it, with the convenience of the nearby Skytrain station, essential places of Sukhumvit Road are but a BTS ride away.
Upon entering the premises of Bliston Suwan Park View, also referred to as Bliston Residence, I took note of the CCTV surveillance and 24-hour security. The security guards on duty are thorough but courteous in doing their jobs. After making the necessary inquiries, the guards direct me to the parking lot where I immediately found a parking spot. I noticed a convenience store adjacent to the lobby entrance and made a mental note to get some suppliers here for later.
The reception is beautifully lit, and immediately, concierges greet me, smiling and inquiring how they could be of service. I couldn’t help notice a dimly lit yet luminescent restaurant directly across the reception counter.
I mention my trial residency to the attractive receptionists, that prior arrangement for my journalistic endeavor had already been made, and within moments, I was given a keycard and let to my appointed suite. The elevator service itself is an exercise in security, you can’t expect the lift to take you to your designated floor without inserting your keycard in a slot below the floor number. I guess they do really prioritize privacy here – not that I mind as it’s comforting to know and not at all a hindrance.
In the lift, I read a notice concerning the Suwan Golf & Country Club, an affiliate of Bliston Residence. The world – class country club is exclusive to the Bangkok metropolitan area and feature an 18 – hole championship golf course. With their spacious meeting room and business center, I’m aware that Bliston Residence caters to executives in town for long – stay and short – stay business. What’s nice is Bliston has taken into account the face that executives oftentimes spend as many hours on golf courses as in boardrooms. Suwan Golf also offers limousine service to – and – from Bliston and the country club.
Upon reaching my suite’s floor, I paced the halls briefly, looking around. It’s clean and quiet, and given that the complex houses 152 apartment units ranging one – to two – and three bedroom layouts, it was nice to see that the hallways are spacious as well. I found my room, opened the door with my keycard and stepped in. I had heard of these apartments’ stylishly decorated and designed interiors and was happy to see the good word-of-mouth was spot on upon entering.

What I like is that the rooms of Bliston tastefully balanced modernity and classic elegance. The attributes of modernity are evident in the linear patterns of the furnishings and minimalist color tones, such as that of the dark mahogany TV shelf or the living room coffee table. The vibrant shades of textiles and linen keep the room from looking cold. Warmth is exuded from the beige curtains, the brightly colored and artfully patterned carpeting, and plush bedding sets. Strategically placed floral décor, Oriental – style ornaments and even classy dishware and kitchen utensils are details that up the elegance.
The three – bedroom 233 square-meter premier suite facilitates a spacious living area, well – equipped kitchen, and homey yet stylish bedrooms. All throughout, multi – split air conditioning provides cool air and an ambiance of freshness. The master bedroom houses a king-size bed, has ample closet space and its own bathroom, but whether one-bedroom or more, all of Bliston’s suite attain the essentials.
The study area makes a comfortable working space, with a work table with built – in compartments for practical storage and even an in – room electronic safe. The living room boasts a Home Entertainment System, a chic flat – screen TV (featuring a multitude of cable channels) and a spacious L-shaped sofa armed with soft pillows to enjoy being a couch potato on.
For long - stay residency, the fully equipped kitchen would indeed come handy, equipped with a refrigerator, cooker hob and hood, microwave oven, toaster, electric kettle, and rice cooker, not to mention glassware and the aforementioned utensils. There’s even a washing and drying machine, and other amenities and handy items include alarm clocks, a hairdryer, stream iron and ironing boards, and towels and toiletries.
Before completely retiring to my room, I headed back down to the in – house convenience store I noted earlier. I didn’t really need any essentials, so opted for some snacks and refreshments instead. I also took the opportunity to explore the building. I peaked into the children’s playground and visited the gymnasium and aerobic area where a few Bliston regulars were sweating their calories away.
Adjacent to the fitness center is Bliston’s swimming pool, and by the time I stumbled upon it, it was already night and beautifully lit, growing even. In addition to steam and sauna rooms, Bliston Residence also houses an onsite day spa. Available facilities are a factor that can make or break the success of a serviced apartment, but each footstep I took only assured me that Bliston and its residents have nothing to worry about.
Upon returning to my room, I decided to try out room service and ordered dinner from the restaurant. Their menu is extensive, so I tried out some Thai dishes and some steak and pasta. After a hearty meal, I decided to lounge, occasionally getting up to pick up a book or a drink.
Downtown Bangkok is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing part of the city, so the view from my suite beheld nothing but pleasing sights, from the verdant tree tops of a nearby park to the majestic architecture of neighboring buildings. When I started dozing off, I tucked myself into bed and practically sunk into its comfort and coziness. Needless to say, I slept like a baby…
I awoke the next day refreshed. The room was sufficiently cool, not freezing, and the beige curtains brought in enough light to arouse me from my sleep without being too glaring. I smiled. I enjoyed the experience and my surveying. Blissful living perfectly encapsulates the experience of a night in Bliston Residence. I felt rested, but I was slightly disappointed… only because I knew it was time to leave. If only I could live like this, everyday…

What Expats Want...

Globalization is spearheading the surge of executive expat travellers, with many heading eastwards. From Beijing to Bangkok, the expatriate community continues to multiply rapidly. A recent GMAC Global Relocation Trends Survey indicated a 68% increase in expatriate population in 2008. As the type of accommodation play an essential role in the successful outcome of the long stay, where do these expats call ‘home’ during their overseas stint?

Bangkok has seen exponential growth in the serviced apartment industry with major players like Frasers, Marriott, Accor, Oakwood and Ascott accounting for higher offerings. Certainly, the allure of a home-away-from-home environment, aside from more space and privacy, is what draws expats away from hotels to serviced apartments. Expats have commented that they enjoy better service, less intrusion into their privacy and much needed space and home amenities with this choice of abode. Also, popular serviced apartments in Bangkok are also mostly sited nearby a BTS skytrain station or a MRT station. Location is a major determining point when deciding on the abode of choice in the city notorious for its congested roads.

Life’s a Bliss
Formerly managed by the Ascott group under the Somerset brand, the 152-room Bliston Suwan Park View is blessed with all the qualities registered on the wish list of expats. My recent stay there revealed that a quiet, tranquil home can lie so conveniently close to a skytrain station along a major traffic way. At Soi Tonson (off Ploenchit Road), where Bliston is sited, you get the best of a serene tree-lined street, shopping convenience with Central Chidlom and Tops supermarket just across the road, and commuting convenience with the Chidlom BTS Station just a 5-minute walk away.

From my 12th floor suite I delighted in the unobstructed vista of the surrounds, a rare privilege in the part of town where most buildings are lined in such close proximity and your only views are those of the neighboring residences. Central Chidlom stood out in the line of vision beckoning a visit to its brand of merchandise and eateries. I perused the bustle of the streets below with busy commuters on the road and skytrain plus those stopping by the street side stores for their daily dose of local delicacies. The sight of hawkers on the same street with the elegant skyline of modern skyscrapers and apartments is certainly a meeting of tradition with trend.

Subtlety reigns in Bliston from the uncomplicated car park that enables ease of access from automobile to apartment, the unhyped yet elegant lobby that does not draw formalities and the unassuming luxury afforded in all the rooms. This is where good service is unobtrusive but avails whenever the need arises.

Maintaining the same professional standards of the Ascott Group that previously managed the property under Sommerset Suwan Park View, Kijja Laowsuwan, who is at the helm of Bliston, is not only ensuring that the same level of luxury and service continues but taking a step further to elevate the lifestyle several notches up. He has in place a comprehensive upgrading programme that begins with the refurbishment of the suites. “We have completed the first stage of a major redevelopment of the suites, converting them from a more traditional décor to a mix of modernism with classical overtones,” Kijja remarked. From my observation during my stay at Bliston, Kijja has certainly succeeded in his objectives.

There are no studios in Bliston and accommodation ranges from 1-bedroom units to 3-bedroom suites. The newly renovated suites certainly afford a lifestyle of excellence with the clever use of space and attention to detail furbishing that places cozy living at the top of the makeover blueprint. Luxurious comfort, modern convenience, blissful lifestyle and congenial living are the focal points of Bliston. Flat screen TVs that are mounted flushed to the wood paneled wall cabinets add poise to the ever-endearing charms of wooden flooring in dark brown shades that mesh well with the muted tones of the wall and flooring. The interior is enlivened with vivacious furnishings with the vibrant hues of the carpet and the vivid colors of silk cushions from Jim Thompson invigorating the ambience. Skillful cabinetry that helps to avail more living space is brilliantly architected to display cupboards that appear to align with the wall.

The Bliston kitchen is a full-fledged kitchen that comes with a generously sized counter, cooker, microwave oven, toaster and a medium size fridge. Complete cutlery sets, cooking utensils, plates and full range of cups and glasses to quench every thirst provide for the differing culinary and beverage preferences of guests. Wine glasses are standard provisions as well. A tasteful dining table with matching dining chairs, sited near the kitchen counter and the main door, will probably be the most convenient and used furniture in the suite – providing for meals, tea breaks and temporary holding zone for groceries, shopping bags and laptop cases.

Washing is made easy saving time, effort and money with the technology advanced washer and separate dryer provided. For those who prefer to do their own ironing, an ironing board and iron are also provided.

In today’s face-paced society work is never done and Bliston, mindful of this, provides a sleek looking study table that is practically designed with effective ergonomics in space, comfort and lighting. And, to meet the demands of modern living, broadband Internet is instantly accessible. A study lamp, electric sockets and a number of drawers for convenient storing completes the functionality of a home work space.

Home recreation and relaxation is accentuated by the plush settees privileging guests with both comfort as well as communion - comfort that luxuriates lounging or watching your favorite movie, and communion with your loved ones or friends facilitated in the most relaxing environment.

Mirrors are used in the interiors forming half of the wall space used. Aside from the aesthetically spacious and pleasing accents created they are practical for those who need, or desire, to be properly groomed before leaving for work or for an appointment. Perhaps, or surely, something the fairer sex will delight in.

The lighting is designed to provide a pleasing selection of ambient setting to the occasion or mood – bright when you need to pore over a book or project and muted for a romantic evening or chilling out on the settee.
Modern creature comforts extend to the bathroom where a rain-shower, quality amenities and elegant sanitary ware provide the rejuvenation in the most sacred area of the apartment. There are three switches in the bathroom affording different light play.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Bliston’s recreation comes in the form of the podium pool, steam and sauna rooms, well-equipped fitness centre, day spa with full massage services and children’s playground.

Dining is catered for at the restaurant on the lobby floor but Bliston is located just a street away from the dining enclave of Lang Suan where superb dining and wining or just enjoying a cupper avails. An assortment of dining options also avails at Central Chidlom, from the popular Loft Food Court to delightful eateries and restaurants sited in the shopping centre.

Bliston has certainly all the attributes that expats want – spacious apartments, superb location, serenity, well-appointed rooms with great facilities and amenities and a place that they can truly call home.
